Australian electric vehicle sales jumped 117% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with EVs now accounting for 25.8% of all new car sales — a milestone that signals rapid acceleration of the country's shift to electric mobility.
Strong Half-Year
According to the Australian Electric Vehicle Council's H1 2026 report, Australians purchased around 158,000 EVs in the first six months of the year. The total EV fleet reached 612,000 vehicles, and buyers now have 196 models to choose from.
Charging Network Expands
Public charging infrastructure also grew sharply, with significantly more charging stations and charging ports rolled out nationwide — helping to ease range anxiety and support higher adoption.
Growing BYD Presence
BYD's presence in the Australian market continues to strengthen, meaning the country's expanding EV ownership base increasingly overlaps with BYD drivers — a rising pool of potential customers for compatible accessories.
