BYD Signs MOU With Inokom for CKD Local Assembly in Malaysia

October 16, 2026 · Shopify API

BYD Malaysia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Inokom to advance CKD (completely knocked-down) local assembly in Malaysia, it announced on October 15, 2026. The partnership replaces a previously shelved plan for BYD to build its own plant in the country.

A pivot to lean local production

Rather than constructing a wholly-owned facility, BYD will work with Inokom — an established Malaysian vehicle assembler — to produce vehicles locally through CKD assembly. Specific models, investment scale and production timelines have not yet been disclosed.

Strengthening Southeast Asian localization

The agreement marks another step in BYD's Southeast Asian localization strategy, following similar CKD arrangements in other regional markets. Local assembly can reduce import costs and tariffs, shorten delivery times, and support the growing demand for BYD vehicles across Malaysia and neighboring markets.
