BYD Brings Its 1.5 MW Flash-Charging Play to Europe's Trucks — and Vows to Build Them Locally

HANNOVER — BYD crashed Europe's commercial-vehicle party on Monday, unveiling the ETT 44 heavy-duty electric tractor at IAA Transportation 2026 and vowing to build trucks locally in Europe from next year.

The ETT 44 Flagship

The 4×2 flagship pairs a 651 kWh Blade Battery with an 851V platform, delivering 743 PS rated and up to 1,000 PS peak. BYD quotes up to 600 km of range at 40 tonnes, while its 1.5 MW Flash Charging system refills 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes — adding up to 400 km. The battery carries a 10-year / 1.2-million-km warranty, far beyond the European norm.

"Less time charging. More time on the road." — Stella Li, BYD Executive Vice President, IAA 2026

Local Production, European Ambition

Stella Li confirmed European sales start next year across a 3.5-to-44-tonne lineup. Facing tariff calls from rivals like MAN, she was blunt: "Once we move all production locally, we become a European company." The comment signals BYD's intent to localise truck production in Europe, echoing its passenger-car strategy of building EU plants to sidestep tariffs.

Pricing and Market

Pricing is unannounced, but Transport & Environment estimates Chinese electric tractors already cost about 30% less than European rivals — a gap that could reshape Europe's diesel-heavy truck market as EU CO₂ targets tighten.
